Choquequirao Trek Details

On our Choquequirao Tour, you’ll embark on an unforgettable journey to the lesser-known sibling of Machu Picchu in the Cusco region of South America. Known as Choquequirao, or ‘Cradle of Gold’, this Inca ruin sits high above sea level, presenting a challenging yet rewarding altitude trek.

As we depart from Santa Teresa, the Choquequirao trek will take us on a steep ascent through the dramatic Apurimac Canyon. Brace yourself for long days of hiking through diverse landscapes, ranging from subtropical rainforests to high-altitude cloud forests. Despite the challenge, the allure of Choquequirao Peru and its captivating history will push you forward.

You will have a chance to explore the expansive ruins of Choquequirao, often devoid of crowds unlike its more famous counterpart, Machu Picchu. A hot shower at the Choquequirao campsite will soothe your tired muscles after a strenuous day’s hike. Then, wrapped in your sleeping bag, you’ll rest under the starlit Andean sky, ready for another day’s adventure.

What to expect from the Trek

Our Choquequirao trek is a journey of contrast and adventure. You will find yourself at elevations up to 3050 meters where the air is thin and the landscape awe-inspiring. Expect to trek for long hours.

This is an intense trek that will test your endurance. Every tough climb will give you incredible views of the Andes and a glimpse into the ancient Inca world.

The trail winds through the majestic Apurimac Canyon, one of the deepest in the world. The terrain here varies significantly, from high mountain passes to lush tropical valleys. Expect changing weather conditions.

During the day, you’ll feel the warm South American sun. While at night, the temperature can drop below 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit).

The Choquequirao campsite is a respite amidst this harsh, beautiful wilderness. At the end of a day’s trek, you’ll enjoy the luxury of a hot shower. Finally, snug in your sleeping bag, you’ll drift off to sleep, resting and recharging for another day of adventure.

4-day Choquequirao Trek Itinerary

Day 1Cusco - Cachora - Apurimac Canyon - Chikisca

On day one, we’ll gather in Cusco bright and early, at 4:00 a.m. Our journey will begin as we drive through the mountainous terrain towards the village of Cachora. From there, we will start our trek along the Apurimac Canyon, experiencing the beauty of the landscape.

By late afternoon, we will reach our destination for the day, Chikisca. After hiking for approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles), we will settle into our campsite, surrounded by the untouched Andean wilderness.

Day 2Chikisca - Choquequirao

On day two, we’ll rise early for breakfast, after which we’ll continue our trek. This will be a challenging day with steep ascents and descents, but also rewarding as we reach the ruins of Choquequirao. We will be hiking for about 14 kilometers (8.7 miles). Once we’re there, we’ll have a blast exploring this amazing ‘Cradle of Gold’, soaking in its rich cultural and historical importance.

Day 3Choquequirao - Apurimac River

On the third day, we’ll have the morning to further explore Choquequirao. Post-lunch, we’ll descend towards Playa Rosalina, a journey of about 8 kilometers (5 miles). This beach along the Apurimac River will be our campsite for the night. We’ll rest under the starlit sky, listening to the gentle lullaby of the river.

Day 4Apurimac River - Cachora - cusco

Upon reaching Cachora in the late afternoon, we will drive back to Cusco, where our unforgettable Choquequirao tour will conclude. Each day of this adventure will be a true testament to your spirit and determination. It will make memories that will stick with you forever.
