Day one of our Salkantay Trek will commence in Cusco. We’ll depart at dawn, around 5:00 a.m., driving towards Mollepata. From there, our hike to Humantay will begin, a journey of approximately 12 kilometers, or about 7.5 miles.
The sight of the serene Humantay Lake will be a rewarding first day’s end. We’ll then proceed to Soraypampa, our stop for the night, to rejuvenate for the adventure that lies ahead. I
Day two will take us from Soraypampa to Abra Salkantay and then to Collpampa. We will tackle the challenging climb to Abra Salkantay, the trek’s highest point at 4,600 meters or around 15,092 feet. This 22-kilometer journey will take us through breathtaking landscapes and past the imposing Salkantay Mountain. We’ll then descend to Collpapampa, our resting spot for the night.
On the third day, our journey will lead us from Collpapampa to La Playa, then to Santa Teresa. We’ll cover about 15 kilometers, or nearly 9.3 miles, traversing lush cloud forests and verdant valleys. Once we reach Santa Teresa, the warm local hot springs will offer a refreshing break from the day’s hike.
Day four will start with a hike from Santa Teresa to Hidroeléctrica. From there, we will make our way to Aguas Calientes. This day’s hike will be approximately 18 kilometers long, which is about 11.2 miles. Upon reaching Aguas Calientes, we’ll rest, recharge, and prepare for the final day’s highlight: Machu Picchu.
On day five, the long-awaited visit to Machu Picchu will finally occur. We’ll ascend to the ancient city early in the morning. This will allow us to witness the breathtaking sunrise over this world heritage site.
